Tips for Being on a Podcast

Having been done over 60 podcast episodes I’ve learnt and created some ways to improve the audio quality and the content quality. I had a new person on my panel last night, Matthew Daniels. He asked me any tips, as it was his first time, and I’ll now share some with you.

If you’re using Skype or another VOiP client, mute your mic when your not talking. Some podcasters tend to record their audio on on track, and the panel, or other host on another track. If someone’s talking and you, let’s say cough, then that’ll be over another person talking, which isn’t easy to edit out. So just hit that mute mic button when you’re not talking.

Read over the shownotes and organize your thoughts. For my podcast Blastr, I’ve got shownotes hosted on a password enclosed wiki, where the panelists confirm if they’re coming. I also include a list of all the topics we’re talking about. Read those over (If the podcast’s host you’ll be on doesn’t have them, ask them what the topics of the show are) Read the topics over and think about what you’re going to say, think of something wild, make it interesting. This way you won’t have to think of what to say as the host announces the story, and leaves you more prepared. If you have a story you’ve been thinking about and would like to talk about it on the show, as the host. I’m always open to one more story if you’ve got something interesting to say.

Don’t multi-task. I always say this in my speeches on productivity, but really makes the one task your doing much better, rather than an okay job on all of them. Don’t be writing a blog post or talking to your friend on IM, while your on the show. You we’re invited to talk and participate in the conversation and agreed to it, focus on that.

Inform the host if you can’t make it, even if there is a slight chance you can’t make it. As a host, I’ve had to turn down some people who have asked to come on because I’ve had more than 7 people scheduled to come. The worst thing is them not coming. Of course you might forget once, but if you know that something might come up, let the host know so they aren’t in a panic, especially in a live show.

So there are 3 tips, feel free to let me know your tips in the comments.
